Recovery

Today has been such a long day.  I got to Jesse’s room just after 7:00 this morning.  They came to take him down to surgery around 9:30.  His pre-op nurse was outstanding and quickly went though and verified all his chart info, and then answered all my questions about when I would get to see him afterward and what I would need to do.  Then Dr. Seper came in to make sure we were good and didn’t have any further questions about the surgery.  Then Dr. Starkman, the anesthesiologist, came in to explain what he would be doing and answer all of our questions about that part.  We both felt very reassured after all that discussion.  The nurse even said that if she ever needed a sinus surgery, she would want Dr. Seper to be the one to do it.

Then Dr. Starkman gave him some a dose of something to help the pain, and he was a very happy camper.  All of a sudden he couldn’t wait to get back to surgery and get started.  They sent me out to the waiting room around 11:15.  The nurse let me know around 12:30 that everything was going fine, but that they still had a while longer to go.  Then at 1:30 Dr. Seper came out to let me know that everything had gone well and that he had been moved into recovery.  She said that with how badly his nose was blocked up the surgery was absolutely necessary.

The recovery nurse called me around 2:00 to say that Jesse was just starting to wake up and that he was in a lot of pain so I would have to wait about 30 minutes or so before I could see him.  At 2:30 they finally brought me back to see him.  Lets just say I was not quite prepared for what he would look like.  Last time he had this surgery was just after we starting dating.  I remember coming to see him in recovery, but I don’t think it was as soon as this time.  Last time his mom was doing all the yucky stuff and I just stuck my head in to say hi really quick.  I was feeding him ice chips because he was so dry, but I felt like I was going to pass out.  I had to walk to the outside of the curtain once or twice to regain my stomach and stop feeling like I was riding in an elevator.  By the time they wheeled him back to his room we were both feeling much better.

Dr. Seper had said that we would be able to go home in a couple of hours, but that didn’t happen.  Not really sure why because I have been the only one doing all of the dressing changes and getting him whatever else he needs.  I thought the benefit of staying overnight was for the nurses to help me with this stuff, but I guess not.  The recovery room nurse did warn me that the nurses upstairs might not know what to do, so she made sure I did.  Anyway we are here for the night now.  Jesse is still in a lot of pain, but he is doing good.  Every time he wakes up he wants his iPhone, and then he falls asleep using it.  I’m so glad this is behind us now and can’t wait to go home!

The big smile on Jesse’s face tells me he had “some of the good juice” because I recognize it from previous pre-ops :>)

Glad to hear you were able to handle all the yucky stuff. We continue to pray for both of you.

I was in a rush when I looked at this before. I finally got some time to really read it. Kristin, I’m sure I’m repeating myself in this next sentence, but I don’t care. You’re the best wife we ever could have wished for for Jesse. We thank God that He brought you two together.

The yucky stuff is sure no fun, but you toughed it out. That’s love for ya! ;-)

I wasn’t sure how I would handle all the yucky stuff, but I think I did okay… especially since I didn’t have any choice. He tried to prepare me for how you always did it.

Wow! I don’t really know what to say for that, but THANKS! We have definitely tested the “sickness and health” part out on each other this year. He has been taking good care of me too.
