Nuggets: Headed Home

September 4, 2011 in Filed Under: Family, Nuggets, Travel 3 Comments

We are packing up our things, hoping to be on the road tomorrow morning. As much as I love being at the Sipes’ farm, I’m ready to be home to our normal routine. We’ve had a very good visit with Grandpa and Grandma. We’ll miss being with them as well as many other fun things that we’ve done here…

:: I’ve already said this, but I’m still excited about the super fresh produce that has shown up at the house.

Lots of tomatoes

Everything that has come has been extra tasty and I have thoroughly enjoyed them!

I’m thinking that when I get home I’ll just sit in my own living room and wait for people to bring me over some veggies from their gardens. What do you think?

Red peppers

:: Since we ended up staying into September, Jesse ran out of a couple of his prescriptions. Of course our awesome CF coordinator, Sue, was able to call in what we needed to the local pharmacy. I like the cute, old-town look and feel of the Galion pharmacy.

Quay

:: We’ve been eating lots and lots of raspberries all week. They were on special for only $1 per pack, way cheaper than home. We made sure to enjoy plenty of them while we could.

Raspberries

:: Guess what else I found? Pepsi made with real sugar. Now, I know I can get this at home every once in a while when they decide to come out with it, but I decided to take advantage of it being on sale and buy some. The kind I usually buy is caffeine free so I’m happy to have the option of caffeine when I want it. Plus I’ve always preferred the taste of Pepsi.

:: I got a good gardening lesson yesterday. We walked across the street to Don’s to see how things grow.

Of course, I knew that carrots and potatoes and onions grow under the ground, but I’ve never actually seen them growing!

Onion

We saw all types of vegetables and even got to dig out a potato and a radish. We liked the tall sunflowers too.

We came home with potatoes, turnips, a radish, tomatoes, and a cucumber… that I picked!

:: Jesse helped out with a lot of chores this week. The first time he mowed, he wore a tank top and completely fried his neck and shoulders. Yesterday, Grandma set him up with a long sleeve shirt and a hat to avoid him getting more sun on his sunburn. He looked like a regular farmer.

Farmer Jesse

Grandpa wanted to help Jesse clean out the mower properly when he finished. I thought this was a sweet picture of Grandpa catching a ride on the side of the mower down to the barn with Jesse.

Jesse also fit in some trash burning. He was looking forward to that chore the whole drive up here. There is no trash pickup here, so that’s the way to get rid of it.

:: My chore has been cooking. We’ve really enjoyed having meals with Grandpa and Grandma. Jesse had one special request meal while we were here… Grandma’s beef and noodles. She made that for him yesterday so he could enjoy one of his favorites.

:: Lastly, more produce! There were boxes full of produce to greet us at church this morning. We were instructed to take plenty so that it wouldn’t spoil.

Church produce

A lot of our produce this week came from farmer Bill. He even had a few butternut squash set aside in his car especially for me. I can’t wait to try them when we get home. I told him I REALLY appreciated all these yummy veggies.

We are coming home with enough fresh veggies to last us a while. My list includes: radish, turnips, potatoes, cucumber, tomatoes, red peppers, zucchini, yellow squash, and butternut squash. Hooray!

Happy Sunday :)

Nuggets: Summer Rain

Hump Day NuggetsHump day nuggets are just a few snapshots of our lives from the past week. I like the idea of documenting a few things that aren’t quite big enough to be a blog post on their own. The idea came from one of my favorite blogs to read, Dig This Chick. It’s hard to believe that we are half way through another week already and thinking about the weekend. This year is just flying by so quickly… where is the time going?

:: It has been raining almost non-stop for days on end. We have hardly stepped foot outside, it’s either pouring rain or blistering hot so we’ve been keeping busy with inside activities. The tall grasses that were growing along the side of our pond are nearly submerged now. I’m just glad we don’t have to brave the storms for a morning commute.

Rain

:: I love to be able to whip up a quick meal, especially on these lazy summer days. I’ve been trying to make sure I always have pre-cooked, ready to use ground beef in the freezer. It’s so much easier to cook a large amount all at once and it saves so much time when I go to use it.

Cooked beef

:: I’ve been continuing to eat more raw veggies since learning they are more nutritious that way. It does not take much veggies to make you feel full and stay full which makes them a great snack to munch on. They really reset your taste buds too, making fruit seem like a sweet treat instead of craving cookies or brownies.

:: We learned a new card game called golf. It’s kinda addicting, we played it with the family all afternoon on Sunday.

:: Our family dog is a little weird. I think most people consider their pets as part of the family, but we take that to the extreme. Ginger often performs tricks to get a treat. Ashley sat her at the table while we were playing cards and made her act nicely for a piece of CANDY! Ginger seemed to understand how much of a treat it was because she ate it from Ashley’s hand so gently and politely. This is normal dog behavior, right?

:: We went bowling with our Bible study group. We often schedule a fun night after we finish the book or series we’ve been working on. I don’t think we had been bowling since around Christmas time. We should go bowling more often, I was a little out of practice.

:: My free cook book came in the mail. I sent in the bar codes off of Namaste products I have purchased and got a cook book of new recipes to make with some of my favorite products. It looks like a lot of them were submitted by other consumers being creative with the products, I can’t wait to try them out.

Happy Wednesday!

Nuggets: This Week

One of my favorite blogs to read is called Dig This Chick. I love her writing style and her fabulous pictures. But what I love most about the blog is imagining what it would be like to live somewhere that I was able to grow my own produce and have chickens in my backyard, like she does. I think it’s always interesting to learn about how other people live.

Hump Day NuggetsDig this chick does a weekly post that she calls hump day nuggets. The definition, according to the urban dictionary, of hump day: Wednesday, the middle of the week, implying that you have to get “over the hump” before you can anticipate the weekend.

Once you’re over the hump, it’s fun to look back at a few small snippets from the activities of the week. She calls it “little bits of the season in photos and words about the last week.” She invited her readers to join in with their own nuggets from the week. Too bad we don’t have any real signs of the season in Florida, but I thought I’d give it a try and documents little thoughts that aren’t enough to make into blog posts of their own.

:: My sister is in town, home from grad school for several weeks. We thought it would be fun to explore a few cute antique shops we always pass by on the way to the beach. They weren’t quite what we were expecting. I guess it takes a unique person to own a shop like that, we were a little creeped out by some of the owners. After a few shops we realized the reason they were following us around so closely was because they must have problems with shoplifters. Each store had signs about being on camera, one store even said we couldn’t enter with a purse… said we must go lock them in the car and then come in. We weren’t interested in walking all the way back to the car just to see this particular store. We must have looked extra suspicious because when we would stop to comment on something that looked cool they’d ask if this was the kind of thing we were looking for and if we were going to buy it. And it wasn’t just one weird store… they were all like that! We had fun anyways. Our most interesting item was an old coffin in a consignment shop… always a good idea to sell those when you’re done with them, you never know who else could make use of it.

Antique shop

:: I continue to enjoy using my own hand-picked tomatoes in my cooking. I’m sure they taste a lot more tomatoe-y than the canned kind. I’m fighting my natural urge to save them so I don’t run out. I’ll have to be sure and pick lots again next year.

Frozen tomatoes

:: I watched an interesting documentary about farming called The Future of Food. It talked about the relationship between farmers, business, and government. It renewed my interest in using fresh ingredients and made me want to find out about buying local produce. How could you not crave some nice veggies after learning about where they come from and how they get to you?

Squash

:: We had the opportunity to babysit for one of our friends. I have done hardly any babysitting since high school, back before I had to get a “real” job. We realized we could use some practice before we’re ready for foster kids. Amelia is usually very picky about who she lets hold or play with her so we were prepared for her cry a lot that night. Luckily she did not. However, I don’t think she really enjoyed her time with us either. She tolerated us playing with her toys, but got upset when we tried to encourage her to play with us. We had no trouble getting her to go to bed after she made it clear how sleepy she was.

Amelia

:: My treats for my second official product review came in. I’m so excited for the opportunity to get to try out all of these brand new products. I’ll be sure to let you know what I think.

Cookies

That’s all the nuggets I have for this week. I need to get better at snapping pictures of things that we do if I’m going to keep having nuggets to share. Happy hump day, the weekend is getting closer!
